Microfinance for Disadvantaged Population

Microfinance being identified as an end by itself by many in the World, Morarka Foundation has been different in utilizing microfinance as a tool to achieve social and economic objectives in rural areas. To achieve the strategic goal of women's control over their lives, the Foundation had promoted the concept of Self Help Group (SHGs) as an institutional arrangement. The disadvantaged women in rural areas have been assisted to form self help groups to begin thrift and credit activities. In addition to linkages with banks, the Foundation had also extended finances to support many income generating activities by these groups. The same tool is now also being utilized for organic agriculture promotion, not only in Shekhawati but across the country. Today there are over 20,000 groups at grass-root level who are being covered under this program.

The microfinance as a tool in Shekhawati is delivering social sector services through 200 Self Help Groups benefiting 2000 women. Some of the Foundation's major initiatives in social sector are:
  • Eradication of Child Labour: This programme began in 2001 with UNICEF support. At the beginning of the programme, families with working children were identified for their rehabilitation. Over Rs. 7,00,000 have been saved by 33 SHGs. Every year about half the members borrow money from the group to initiate new or for expanding their existing income generating activities, besides accessing funds to meet their emergency requirement.

  • Empowerment of Aged: This project was initiated in 10 villages in the year 2000-01. 15 SHGs were formed, with over 200 old age persons today. The groups have already created a total kitty of Rs. 5,00,000/- comprising of their own savings, bank loans and revolving fund from Morarka Foundation. This small kitty has enabled members to disburse a total loan portfolio of over Rs. 10,00,000/-.

  • Women SHGs: In addition 30 more SHGs are functional in villages. A substantial amount has already been saved by them through regular contributions. Revolving funds are also given to meet their credit requirements.
Microfinance as a tool has now become a means for the empowerment of women.
